About the book

During the turbulent 1960s Lee Roy Herron and his high school buddy from Lubbock, David Nelson, both signed up for Marine Corps officer training. Decisions during college years at Texas Tech took the pair in different directions—Herron to the infantry, language school and the cauldron of Vietnam; Nelson to law school, the JAG office and eventually to Okinawa.

When Herron was killed on the front lines in 1969, only two months into his tour of duty, Nelson mourned the tragic loss along with Herron’s family. Years later, a chance encounter with a retired officer spurred Nelson to delve more deeply into his friend’s death. Nelson tells what he learned in David and Lee Roy: A Vietnam Story (with co-author Randolph B. Schiffer; published September 2011 by Texas Tech University Press), a memoir that conveys the poignant lesson of what true heroism means.

“A gripping chronicle of character and commitment. David Nelson’s account of how Lee Roy Herron became the recipient of the Navy Cross in Vietnam is a reminder of why American heroes still matter.” —Lt. Col. Oliver North, USMC (ret.)
